A doctor has access to totally different electronic information services than the average jackass on Facebook, if you didn’t know. Lawyers and journalists have their own versions of this too. So yeah, any doctor has better info than any private individual.

More importantly, they have well-informed judgment about how to consume those statistics, quality them, and apply them. This is quite important as the average Facebook jackass is bombarded by deliberately misleading information which they need to think critically about unraveling.

I think you’re missing that she is a pediatrician and not just a “doctor.” Pediatricians administer a big majority of vaccines and care for the patients receiving them. They probably do learn a hell of a lot more about them than, say, an oncologist who spends all their time treating cancer in old people. And they see the effects of them up close in the field. Any doctor is constantly researching and staying up to date. A pediatrician worth their salt is very well educated on all relevant studies even if they didn’t conduct those studies with their own two hands. I reject the notion that you need to conduct the studies to know the science: that’s a ludicrous bar for us to set.

Sure. Young people make great activists. If only activism were counted. Old people quietly vote, consistently, many of them just dropping off an envelope at church or whatever. No big noise. No social media posts. And those votes are what gets counted.

Sometimes I think this is driven by basic stuff like the fact that young people move more often. I moved every year from age 18 to 25. That means my registration was usually behind, I didn’t always get my ballot in the mail, and I didn’t know where my polling place was necessarily. I’m old now and have been in the same residence for 10 years. My polling place is 2 doors down. I never miss a ballot. It’s really just that simple.

Damn. I hope the end of my days isn’t marked by such rancor.

The voters themselves are decrepit. Young people say voting won’t change things and bring their own prophecy true.

This is one of the things I don’t like about the whole Twitter format. There’s no moderator layer. Every lemmy community must be created by a moderator and that mod can be held accountable.

There isn’t even a concept of communities on Twitter / Mastodon. Hashtags? Nobody owns monitoring them, and they can be freely improvised at will. It really is just the instance and its zillion users with nothing in between. Imagine a lemmy instance admin being responsible for all the moderation… would never work.

That’s surprising, since it’s such an important part of the creative work. I would guess that it was relegated to women and undervalued because it probably involved a great deal of manual work back in the day - splicing film and so on. I hope we’re talking about a long time ago, anyway. It’s certainly a recognized role now. The only film editor I know in the business (at Pixar) is a woman, fwiw.

Editing is so impactful on the final, delivered performance that I’m surprised I’ve never heard something like this before.

Yeah. I’m old and slow and it even felt dated to me, though I still really enjoyed some of it. BL2 was far superior. Everyone always talks about that Handsome Jack monologue with the spoons but the side quest where that little town has the shivers was just flat out hilarious and awesome.
