  • US didn’t really ban it because they didn’t like it. While there was a women’s group protesting against the alcoholism in the country, I don’t think it would have had any traction were it not for the anti union push.

    Saloons were a great meetup spot to make unions. Everyone from work was already there. If companies could make saloons illegal, it would make it harder to make unions. But there was a problem. The US got a lot of its tax revenue from alcohol taxes.

    So they pitched the idea of replacing alcohol tax with income tax, making the budget balance (in fact much improve!). So it got passed to benefit the US government budget, and help the union situation for companies.

    It was not prohibited for long. As you stated, it quickly went awry. But it didn’t matter. The US government now gets its income tax, plus alcohol tax now. Saloons became less popular since they were gone long enough for habits to change.


  • I’m not against gun ownership. I’m against zero gun ownership regulation. Requiring background checks seems like a no brainer but we cannot even get to that part. The next I would suggest is a weekend long course on the proper use, safety, cleaning, and storage of your weapon before you are allowed to buy one. Finally, I think we should have that class reupped every 2 years to keep your license to own the firearm. It’s a dangerous thing to have around and most good gun owners would support some of this, even if it is a hassle. It could be made fun too though. Free ammo for some range practice or something. Maybe a few for the class covers that, I don’t know. Consider it a meetup with other people with similar interests.


  • I think the idea is, most people could build a doghouse with no training, but you need planning and education to plan/build a skyscraper. If you want to write your own app at home, maybe no software planning is really required. Keep nailing in workarounds. But if you want to build a huge system, you need to do a bit more than workarounds. You need a good plan from the start to make it all efficient and in a manner others can contribute to the code base.

    That said, I feel like just having workarounds is really common even in large industry settings. Maybe I’m wrong though. I’m more of a home doghouse builder type myself.









  • So right now the PE ratio of the s & p 500 is 26 or so. That number on average historically around 15.5 if I remember correctly. Meaning it would take 15.5 year’s profits at current profit levels to pay for a stock you buy. Ie, if a share was worth ten dollars, it would take 15.5 years for the companies to all make enough profit to cover the price of ten dollars for all the shares.

    So that’s average. We are now at 26 or more. So it now takes 26 years. Meaning, the stock market is TOO EXPENSIVE. This is a great thing for the boomers living off selling their shares. Just like with their overpriced homes, they are enjoying this situation.

    Those of us working and BUYING shares are not. We can buy less percentage of a company for more money, and expect poorer returns on what we invest today. Same as with houses. We can buy less home for more money. Long term, means we will either have to work longer, or somehow live on less when we are unable to work anymore as we age.

    So if you tell me we can perhaps get universal healthcare AND enjoy the benefit of stocks returning to reasonable levels enjoyed by previous generations, I’m now even more excited thinking about universal healthcare.





  • Wtf this is not correct at all. Pharmacists are part of your healthcare team and are absolutely just as bound by HIPAA as your doctor. If a cop asks for records we direct them to corporate so that lawyers can figure that out. Same if a lawyer subpoenas for records.

    Though you are correct if another pharmacist or a physician called to ask what a patient was taking we would not be bound by HIPAA because that request should be required info to treat the patient. Eg, you are in the hospital and they have to call the pharmacy to see what you are taking because you either aren’t sure or are unconscious.



  • Nope. In a bizarre twist, pharmacies PAY for the privilege of using a discount card to make your med cheaper. GoodRx charges the most that I am aware of, but these payments can be like $1-$7 paid to the coupon provider. The reason is, GoodRx advertised the lowest price they would accept to you, so they paid GoodRx for the advertisement that brought you in. While you are in they hope to make a profit in other ways, and may also be making a small profit still, despite the apparent 90% markdown.

    The reason they cannot discount without the card is because they must have a “usual and customary” charge to start the negotiations with when they determine how much the insurance companies will pay. If they just discounted willy nilly, that would make the charge they started with wrong, which could be considered fraudulently representing their pricing.

    Healthcare in America guys. It makes sense. Trust me, no better way could possibly be constructed.


  • At my job years ago they had a required training that was watching a video that was essentially anti union propaganda.

    They had two managers discussing the need for a new supervisor position opening up, and discussing two qualified candidates. Then a third guy (poorly dressed and obnoxious personality) comes in and says they have to promote this other guy, due to union rules. The managers exclaim that guy barely ever comes to work and when he does has very poor performance, but Obnoxious Union Guy insists their hands are tied and they must promote him.

    End Scene.

    Now, good employee forced to watch this video, can’t you see how unions are bad?? And YOU have to pay a fee to essentially destroy the company so we go under and you have to get a new job! Be a good little employee and keep working hard and forget the word Union exists.
