Another point for Nioh 2. Still the single best souls-like for pure gameplay if you give it the chance.

Came into the comments to bring this one up. Truly interesting read and kept me engaged even back in high school.
Hah! What an idiot.
It definitely got better, but can still be buggy. You can also pretty much guarantee there will be some bigass bugs when the new DLC comes out, it’s the Owlcat way.
I’d say the actual quality doesn’t take a nosedive anymore, the game is pretty consistently fun from start to finish. The beginning definitely has more going on though.
Vermintide is a lot of fun. The total war Warhammer games are pretty good.
My personal favorite (as an RPG fan) is Rogue Trader (40k) by Owlcat Games. Game is superbly written and the combat and world is pretty fun too. If you hate CRPGs, stay away though. This game really showed me the secret sauce Warhammer 40k has going for it.
I’m excited as hell for space marine 2. We’ll see how that goes.
If you like ARPGs, I remember enjoying Untold Legends a lot as a kid. Was a PSP launch title, and had a very dark themeing. I don’t know if my kid memory can be trusted on the quality but I’ve seen a few other people recommend it on here so I doubt it’s bad.
Honestly since the original artist(s) left, I wasn’t interested in a follow-up anyway. A second disco Elysium without the same art and story direction would have little to no relation to the game that came before.
Honestly still one of my favorite shows, maybe my favorite ever. It can be campy and unrealistic sometimes, it stays within the realm of “I guess that’s possible” that you will still be curious about how they will beat the monster of the week. It’s a lot of fun.
Another vote for Firefox. Just switched over from chromium based, and i could easily port over all my info and bookmarks and shit, and it feels great to not support a monopoly
Then you have games that do space travel so well that I’m beyond scared shitless in them, like Outer Wilds. So many games have already managed to convey some of these feelings.
I think the big issue with a personal preference of realism vs. Fantasy is that Starfield has no commitment to realism in its execution (I say this with 12 hours played before I gave up). It is very much made to cater to lowest common denominator in other space travel things. The ship movement is very primitive and simplified. Travelling to new solar systems, landing on a planet, etc. Is done through fast travelling on the map to connect the different cells. It does not feel immersive in the slightest to me, and I have really enjoyed the “realism” of games like Elite Dangerous in the past.
Most damning is the lack of environmental planet differences. The only affect of a planets negative traits is suit protection reduction. There is no life support, your oxygen is just a stamina system. There is no vehicles. You are just running across barren, boring, procedural planets with none of the pomp and circumstance of games that have done effective space exploration.
Maybe in 2 years of mods you might have a more realistic experience out of starfield.
I understand that desire a lot!
I do miss traditional dungeons, but as a person who likes playing a ton of different games and genres, I think TOTK (far more than BOTW) really does some incredible things with it’s systems and really invites true creativity. I think, overall, that outshines the very enjoyable, but linear approach of the older games.
I would love a next gen, classically dungeon based Zelda game too, but I think that if one of the older Zelda games came out today (skyward sword, ocarina, wind waker, etc) it simply wouldn’t have the universally fun pull of BOTW or TOTK.
They have big issues, yeah. But they are doing more to advance gaming as a whole by a huge amount and I can’t help but appreciate them.
I agree. The thing that keeps me going is the idea of finding community again.
Not sure how many people in this thread are American, but we have a very independent point of view. The “optimal” way of living is leaving your parents, leaving your home, and building a new home somewhere else. We tend to be more independent overall and less likely to look to others for comfort, to our detriment. At least, that has been my experience.
So I think the best thing to do is go out there, find a community that DOES care. Because they DO exist. Look for hobby classes, look for new friends in your interests, look for a church (if that is your thing. I am UU so the people at those churches are often some of the nicest, most leftist people around).
I’m moving soon, and I think the thing that keeps me going is the idea of finding new community after I move. You can also affect meaningful change as a community when you can’t do it alone.
