Its easy for a passerby to appreciate the work, skill, and creativity that goes into a painting or song. Its hard for the average person to infer those things looking at an electrical box or a plumbing network. An electrician knows when they’re looking at good up to code wiring and a plumber can tell if the plumbing can be put together right. Those are things the average person has no concept of and doesn’t want to think about all unless they have to. One provides instant artistic appeal while having no practical value, the other provides practical value but its systems are too complicated for the average person to appreciate in totality.

  • I understand the sentiment and agree that an individuals abstenance or lack there ofay not have an visible impact on the macroscale. Reddit will exist and be used with or without me or 10,000 like me.

I judge myself by my own actions and their relation to my personal philosophies. If I violate my priciples or don’t even try to uphold them then what kind of person am I? Someone who talks the big talk to get in on a morally superior circle jerk but won’t walk the walk when nobody’s looking, thats who. And thats wrong, to me. Even if nothing else is achieved through reddit abstinence, I do feel good about upholding my personal values by participating in a personal protest. It matters to me.

  • I try to treat them as mutually exclusive as in I try really really hard to not use or browse reddit unless absolutely needed. Instead channeling whatever interaction I do into lemmy.

You ever hear of voting with your wallet? Well on the internet you vote with your attention and interaction. Whatever site you use and contribute to inevitably grows in content value from your discussions (if you are one of the few who actually post and writes well thought out comments).

Im a prideful nerd who believes people should be willing to sacrifice convinence or protest against something indefinitely if they really believe in the cause. Theres many parts of lemmy I don’t like but its core tenants of decentralized federation and non-profit community operated social internet services run with open source software speaks to me enough.

  • The idea that simple rules lead to incredibly complex behavior is not new and wolfram was not the first mathematician to realize it even if he wants to pretend he is.

I’m big into fractal geometry so I would say Mandelbrot was the first 20th century mathematician to really get that concept along side the founding chaos theorist but even their realizations about the fractal nature of the universe ride off shoulders of others work.

I guess for computational mathematicians, the fractal nature of the universe and the simple rules making complex systems is new and mind blowing, for me and everyone whos read through deep simplicity its old ideas recycled into a new branch of mathematics reworded in terms a computer scientist thinks in.

Its not that the ideas aren’t important or mind blowing, they just aren’t new and the academic community has had decades to digest them.

And before the academic community came along many eastern religions came to similar concluions about the nature of the universe a couple thousand years earlier thanks to some good old fashioned shrooms and pot, so these general ideas have also been floating around forever and academics weren’t even the first to suggest them only the first to kind of prove them right with logic and experimental evidence.

  • Cats are true masters of the grift, kittens have unlocked the compounding effects of cat cuteness multiplied by baby cuteness that almost becomes a cognitohazard which hijacks other mammals parental instincts. kind of like the mammilian version of parasitic birds that make other species take care of their young. Toxoplasmosis probably doesn’t help either.

I say this as a person that has multiple cats.

  • This also seems to have the effect of people getting less salty at being down voted, on reddit I noticed the trend of people verbally expressing salt at even a single down vote editing their whole comment to go “and to the brainlet sheeple soyjack who down voted me I’d like you to know yada yada”

Here I notice less people throwing a verbal tantrum over the idea not everyone likes their opinion. Whenever I get the occasional down vote barrage at a spicy opinion I think “ah well can’t win em all, guess maybe my opinion might be a little shit” not amend my post with “HOW FUCKING DARE YOU YOU FUCKING SUBHUMAN TROGLODYTES”
