I had heard that T-Pain’s cover was good but never heard it myself until just now. Not only did he absolutely kill it, but the guitarist went off too. Great performance that honours the original.
I’m not sure if I’d agree on it being better than the original, but it does manage to keep the energy of the original while making the whole thing heavier.
Holy cow, that’s one way to honor a band’s legacy. I’m not surprised it moved Plant to tears. Can you imagine sitting there, seeing this immense spectacle and going “Holy shit, we inspired all these people”? Must be mind blowing.
Thanks for adding that comment. I do recall reading about this somewhere but I forgot to add her as the original artist.
That said, listening to the cover by Manson it’s pretty clear he’s primarily inspired by Soft Cell’s version of the song.
Wow. Never heard this version of the song, but man did Chvrches knock out it the park. It’s almost unrecognizable but familiar at the same time.
I would’ve added it to my list if you hadn’t. Jeff’s version is so good the Cohen original sounds like a cover to me these days.
Also, the only other song besides Cash’s rendition of Hurt that will move me to tears on every listen.
Some of these are a bit more obscure, but I think these deserve mention for either transforming or faithfully updating the original songs:
Visigoth covering Necropolis by Manila road: https://youtu.be/QWixcWq1HPk
Cradle of filth covering Temptation by Heaven 17: https://youtu.be/MfMa2lrFxhY
The unseen covering Paint it black by the Rolling Stones: https://youtu.be/QAowDvxJN1A
Type O Negative covering Cinnamon girl by Neil Young: https://youtu.be/BO9aD4mzSE8
Electric Callboy covering Everytime we touch by Cascada: https://youtu.be/AuBXeF5acqE
Marylin Mansion covering Tainted love by Soft Cell: https://youtu.be/srcb-zmKDOE
HIM covering Wicked game by Chris Isaak: https://youtu.be/8oYodfK4DkE
And who can forget the Guns and Roses cover of Knocking on Heaven’s door by Bob Dylan: https://youtu.be/k04tX2fvh0o (I’m pretty sure this is another case of a super popular cover eclipsing the original by another super star)
[Edit] Forgot this amazing cover of Pink Floyd’s Welcome to the machine by Shadows Fall: https://youtu.be/kvMDk3M3c1c
There have been countless covers of “while my guitar gently weeps” but I think none of them were as flamboyant as the collaboration between Dani Harrison, Tom Petty, Steve Winwood, Jeff Lyne, and of course Prince.
I don’t agree with folks saying this is the best guitar solo ever but man does Prince pour his heart and soul into it.
Such a shame Jon went off the deep end and killed the band in the process. Iced Earth used to be one of my favorite bands, but I haven’t listened to them any more since the insurrection.
That said, in hindsight, the signs were there for a long time. It’s just that I didn’t expect him to go so far down the rabbit hole.
Not sure why your getting downvoted, this is a pretty legit question.
Thanks for sharing these gems. I can almost feel the exasperation in some of the emails and their replies.
What about World coming down or Life is killing me? I find the album’s that document the band and Peter’s struggles easier to connect with at an emotional level than the previous - admittedly great - albums where it sometimes felt like the band was intentionally parodying the goth scene.
I can’t really or an order to them as they’re all favorites of mine, but there’s a top 10:
Iron Maiden - Somewhere in time
Life of Agony - River runs red
At the gates - Slaughter of the soul
In Flames - Colony
Sentenced - Down
Black Sabbath - Master of reality
Iced Earth - Alive in Athens (I know this is cheating as it’s basically a best of album, but so what)
Kyuss - Welcome to sky valley
Queensryche - Operation mindcrime
Death - The sound of perseverance
Honestly though, I could put together a top “whatever” and still have too little space to place all the entries.
That’s the worst part imho. We should hold Ford accountable and demand that money back if they unilaterally decide to axe the plan we collectively funded.
Remember how we used to think people should retire in old age, instead of running a country? Pepperidge farm remembers.
It’s a good thing the Republican leadership is as incompetent as they are morally bankrupt, but that doesn’t mean they haven’t managed to stumble their way into pushing the US to the brink of a dictatorship. As the KGB used to say, a lot of them are “useful idiots” which can be orchestrated by careful external manipulation.
I’m not onboard with that conspiracy, as there were certainly attempts on his life throughout his reign. But I do agree with the relevancy of that Sun Tzu quote.
By 1943 Hitler was making such poor decisions it would’ve actually benefited the Nazi war effort if he had been removed from power.
That last part is the terrifying bit, honestly. Trump is an egomaniac with the attention span of a toddler. He’s an unguided projectile of spite and vanity.
Imagine someone competent filling his shoes with the unprecedented powers that were recently granted by the supreme court and the rabid MAGA fanbase behind them.
The potential for lasting damage goes (even further) off the scale. I shudder to think what that might actually look like.
Honestly, in the event Biden loses, the best hope the US has is Trump’s general incompetence.
Thanks for sharing this. I didn’t really vibe with it initially, but this cover has really grown on me. Miley doesn’t hit the same high notes as Debbie but she puts a lot of power behind it and gives the song an entirely different vibe as a result. She’s really singing her heart out here, and it shows.
