I don’t think it’s possible. iTunes requires a full OS install, so you’ll have to just run it on a VM. And Apple has things locked down so much that the only way to do full iPhone/iPad backups is through iTunes.

I just use Spotify for podcasts. Unless there’s something I’m missing from other podcast apps, Spotify works great for me.

I think they mean it slows them down even more.

Are they the kind that have two parts with the middle part popping up? This kind uses the middle part to lock the outside in place and you have to pull the inside up first before you take them out.
