Sorry the instance of peertube was just offline because I’ve been doing some cleaning on the server, now it’s online again.

I agree with your sentiment that it’s very bad that you can’t even move communities to a new server if the admin wants it, not to talk about if they didn’t want to.
I really like how matrix implemented it, you can start a public room, other people can make aliases, if your server is gone everything is still accessible through the aliases.
No, it was going on for a couple of years and in different countries and so.
I Germany we even have a word for guys like that: “Langhaariger Bombenleger”.
I’m white and the only time I had interaction with police was when I had long hair. They would pull me out at the airport to search my bag, on every border by car or by boat, even when they let the rest of my family go. Even just driving my car they would stop me.
Once I cut off my hair it immediately stopped, and I haven’t been stopped since ever. This was about 15 years ago.
I like the webring idea but I would hope finding the right server would be automated, clicking through thousands of servers sounds exhausting.
So, did a LLM write this story?
How hard are the concept of uploading to more than one platform and dogfeeding selfhosting to understand.
I did that about 10 years ago, me and my brother spent Christmas by changing tapes cutting videos and naming the files. In the 90ies my dad bought a camera and we filmed a lot for a couple of years and it’s awesome to have the videos. There are so many people there who are dead now, pictures are great but on a video you see how they moved in a particular way, how they spoke and how they interacted with each other, it’s amazing! I recommend everyone to record their parent and grandparents just doing boring every day stuff like cooking or just drinking tea or cleaning the yard.
The thing is people always talk about there being not enough content on peertube but then nobody uploads their videos to it even if they have an instance. And on top of it, there is a easy way to synchronize your YouTube and PeerTube channel too if you insist to keep using YouTube for uploading, just add your YouTube channel URL to your PeerTube channel and tell it to synchronize, that’s it, it will do it for you. But for some reason the self hosting YouTubers can’t be bothered with that?
Most of the views would be still in YouTube anyway, and those tremendous amounts are not that big because with PeerTube you share the bandwidth with other instances and even other clients (source: I’m running my own instance).
So they do have a PeerTube instance, just chose not to upload anything to it?
They could always upload a copy to YouTube to reach the rest also.
So why are the videos not self hosted?
I’m still working in the automotive and mostly with European OEMs. I might have the opportunity to switch to a project in China. And because I’m located in Korea this would make the timezone issues go away too. But the project is still for a German OEM who just produces in China, I wonder if they have a future there.
He doesn’t want to be left behind, everyone else is doing it, the King will be mad at you if you’re the outlier.
Thanks for the summary. So it still sends the data to a server, even if it’s Mozillas. Then I still can’t use it for work, because the data is private and they wouldn’t appreciate me sending their data toozilla.

I was wondering why a obviously sarcastic comment got so many downvotes. But I kind of realize every now and then that people really can’t distinguish between a sarcastic one and a genuine one without the “/s” tag, even if I think it’s so on the nose that I think it can’t be mistaken.
Just for my understanding, wasn’t OpenAI not also a nonprofit and is now a forprofit and the CEO is at least as bad as Zuckerberg?
I understand it will make it a little bit harder, but nothing prevents Mastodon to go the OpenAI way or is the situation different in some way?
