  • I used NextCloud in a Docker container but found that unless I was really on top of checking versions for updates, it was very easy to get behind and then unless one way VERY careful about going up in the correct increments, it was quite easy to end up with a version mismatch between the files and DB structure.

As much as I hate SNAP (mainly due to them being overused on Ubuntu desktop and bloaty blobs full of weird permission issues) I’ve got to say that moving to a SNAP version of NextCloud on my server has made my life so much easier. A scheduled job runs a “snap refresh” regularly and it’s been fairly stable for over a year now, except for one small incident where it broke the reference to the internal office suite install and for some reason stated trying to go with a localhost version

  • This is actually one thing I’ve been thinking AI and deepfake tech can potentially do good. Let’s say you have an idea and can code… You have an idea for music but no instrumental talent, so the best you can do is hum it. You can’t afford voice actors or other professionals.

Or maybe you’re artist with an idea who can storyboard but not code. Maybe you can make 2d designs but not 3D models, or aren’t great at animate.

But… there is software that can take what you say and change it to a different voice. It can animate a model to match the words. Similarly, software that could generate instrumental sounds from humming is possible. An AI can generate interactive dialog. It could also provide assistance in the generation of music, debugging of code, and eventually more advanced 3D modeling.

A lot of game design software is much more a GUI to an environment/model and triggers etc than stuff like writing hardcore backend C++ code etc. AI could take that even further.

Then add VR. Drop somebody into a blank-slate where they can create a whole world with a word, a gesture, and a great idea.

One day, that might be a reality.

  • Yeah, some stuff has including Bill and Ted.

Off the top of my head, stuff that had a neat idea but kinda didn’t come out or do well:

    • Krull
    • RIPD
    • Hancock
    • A good portion of the Justice League movies (but too soon for that)
    • Avatar (though I’ve heard the new series is ok, also: not the 3D one with the giant Smurfs)
    • Solaris

Various book or game adaptations that tried and failed or were overshadowed by something else

    • Narnia (failed vs Harry Potter and didn’t get followed through, but wasn’t that bad)
    • Percy Jackson
    • Eragon
    • Dresden Files TV series
    • Wing Commander
    • Doom (the 3rd game in the series actually did have a plot and it was better)

  • With that though, I’m happy with good sequels to old movies, franchises or shows. Not many actually do that, but a few gems IMHO include Rogue One and Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

Really though, if they’re going to regurgitate old stuff why not take a movie/series that had a good premise and bad execution. It at least stands a chance of being better the second round.

Hell, you could even poke fun at the reasons the original sucked and/or make it a twist in the remake.
