I think you’re misunderstanding me. I’m talking about the change in the regulating body now allowing the teams, or at least the countries sponsoring them, to make their own choices. It used to be that the regulating body enforced skimpy bikinis, and now they don’t. That’s progress. Individual teams using that choice to be shitty in no way undermines that progress. Less people being forced to do or wear things against their will, better judgement, or desire is always better, even if there’s still progress to be made.

And this is tangential and I don’t really wish to get into an argument over it, but I have to point out that the logic of “well they knew what they were getting into so they by default consented to it” is really fucking terrible logic. Here, make the choice between being objectified so you can continue competing, or give up your dreams to maintain your dignity! What the fuck kind of choice is that? That’s coercion hiding behind choice. That’s one step below “have sex with me or you’re fired”. Fuck that noise.

  • The commenter I replied to said, “when there isn’t a choice, it’s repression”. This goes the other way, too. When the volleyball teams didn’t have the choice to cover up because the regulating body enforced “less than 10cm coverage” - which is a fact, this is a thing they did until recently - it’s just as bad. No woman should be forced to wear more or less clothing than they want. My comment was specifically in reference to the change in rules by the governing body allowing teams to come to their own decisions regarding appropriate uniform. Will some teams enforce regulations that are also bad? Yes, but progress is progress. A smaller group of people being forced to follow shitty regulations is always better than a huge group of people being forced to follow shitty regulations. That individual teams do not allow choice in no way undermines the progress of the regulating body.

  • You know, as jaded as I am, it still saddens me to see gen z being just as jaded. I’m going to try a different tack, though I probably won’t change your mind.

Biden is a dusty old milquetoast imperialist fucktwat. No arguments on that front. However, due to the way our electoral system works, 3rd parties cannot currently be viable at a national level because you and I will never, ever be able to convince 50%+ of the population to vote outside the D/R binary. It is an unfortunate reality that every vote not explicitly for Biden is a vote that will help Trump in the end.

What needs to happen, realistically, is that we defeat Trump, buy ourselves 4 more years of slow decline rather than complete collapse, and work at a local level to grow support for some form of ranked voting before 2028. Now, granted, that’s been the goal of most pacifist leftists for years now and it hasn’t happened. However, keep in mind that even if Trump is voted in and we see a fascist collapse, revolution probably just… won’t happen. Not in America. Not in our lifetimes. Not in enough force to change anything. And if revolution doesn’t happen and you’re now living in a full-on fascist hellscape, how will you get out? Do you have a plan? Is it feasible? Even if it’s feasible now, will it remain so in two years?

I dunno. I have very little hope at this point, and maybe the “burn it down” zoomers are right. Maybe you all and gen alpha have enough energy to overcome the lethargic despair and bitterness that has suffused us older folks. All I know is that I’m too fucking tired to revolt after the train crash, so I’ll try my best to stop the train instead and work to build new tracks going the other direction. It’d be nice to have a little help but… Honestly I don’t blame you if you just want to see it crash at this point.

Wow, writing that all out just made me even more depressed 🥲

  • The problem I see is not that Islamophobes are against the religion of Islam. They’re mostly just against brown people and use “Islam is a religion of hate” as an excuse to justify their racism. Furthermore, most Islamophobes “hate” Islam for the same reasons the love Christianity, they just don’t like that brown people have been able to do what they haven’t - suppress an entire population through the use of their religion, subjugating and oppressing women, LGBTQ+, other races, and non-believers. It’s not that most of them have any actual problems with what hard-right Islam does, they just don’t like that those brown (enter slur of choice)s are the ones doing it instead of them.

  • Oh, I see the problem. You’ve written black and brown people.

You should know by now that they don’t count as people unless they go through a very rigorous “personhood” check, with markers such as “will they stay quiet about racism,” “will they strive to emulate rich white people in dress, speech and manner, to the detriment of their own culture,” “will they lead fully sanitized lives as wage slaves without complaint and never dabble in white collar or petty crimes that would be ignored if their skin was lighter,” and “will they silently and happily vote for rich white capitalists in politics, against their best interest”. Because clearly if they can’t follow these very generous and simple guidelines, they don’t want to be considered people, duh.

Fuck I feel dirty having typed that out.
