Yeah, AWS is ginormous and largely invisible. You can usually figure out when something’s in AWS if you can traceroute it, and sometimes by IP, but that requires knowing the IP of the server in question AND having the know-how to use and understand those tools’ output.

I recently bought a Mac Mini because music production on Linux had me fighting my tools more than using them. My Linux box is a 7800x3d/7800xtx. The Mini idles at 4w, while the 78000xtx alone idles closer to 50w. I use the mini for everything non-gaming now.

For me it’s an investment in freezing my housing costs. I bought 8 years ago and since then the increases in my housing costs have been around 5% as taxes go up. In the same time period, rent for the apartment I was in previously has gone up 65% and is higher than my mortgage payment. Had I not purchased a house there’s a good chance I would have had to either move in with family or move to a much cheaper area.

USB DVD readers are pretty cheap and backing up a DVD movie to a file (either just the movie as mp4/whatever or the whole disc with menus, special content and all that jazz as an ISO) is trivial. DVDs themselves are fragile circles of plastic that store data a micron-thin foil layer that can be hurt by too spicy a laser pointer. Do yourself and your roommate a favor and make a copy of that thing for posterity’s sake.
