  • I have never watched any of these Disney CGI cash grab remakes not the least because they make me nauseous with how cynical and soulless they look.

It sounds like hyperbole but when I watch a clip of one of these movies all I can think about is how the structure of modern society is extremely hostile towards materially (not just rhetorically) valuing artists and valuing their labor and unique strengths.

THIS was the inveitable final form of the broken and dying society I was born into wasn’t it?

The experience of seeing these kinds of degradations (along the axis of humanity) of art is to make me wish I was never raised an artist and that I could trade every bit of my creativity away for something people actually value and relieve me of the living hell of trying and constantly failing to navigate modern daily life with an artist’s ADHD mind.

  • This is the only plot line that will get any oxygen from a fascist society that is losing its ability to tell stories about realistic villains because to make them realistic is to make them dangerously indistinguishable from real life CEOs, politicians and the ultrawealthy in general.

What you are observing is the symptoms of a society on the verge of plunging into nihilism because the political center has agreed to take everything with substance off the table so as not to offend conservative snowflakes who mass murderers like the late Brian Thomson of United Healthcare hide behind while they condemn countless of us to death or lives of extreme suffering.

A descent into authoritarianism only can happen after people have had their imaginations filled with villains who are even worse, which in practice always means reducing villains in storytelling to one dimensional agents of evil who desire to do evil because they are evil and ugly and that is just how it is.

(I made a seperate post because for alternate idea)

Have you considered hosting a lemmy instance yourself and possibly preconstructing lemmy threads in some bulk fashion with gifs grouped by topic or theme and just use lemmy itself as the platform to share gifs?

Just because lemmy threads were created to mimic reddit threads doesn’t mean we are confined to only using lemmy as a reddit-like tool…

Just an interesting thought I had shrugs

  • …ok I know I always recommend dokuwiki for everything but it is super easy to set up and doesn’t need a database or anything and it comes stock with a nice gui media manager and a lot of plugins that extend that functionality.

If you are willing to provide or pay for the hosting of a large amount of images I don’t see the reason to go with anything more complicated though you may find something more minimal that suits your needs.

    https://www.dokuwiki.org/dokuwiki

    https://www.dokuwiki.org/tips:cms

I don’t know if there is a way to handle metadata for non-jpg images but there are a number of ways you could organize gifs including photo namespaces.

    https://www.dokuwiki.org/media_manager

or using the imagebox plugin and just directly put tags in the caption

    https://www.dokuwiki.org/plugin:imagebox

or a number of other ways probably.

The nice thing about this solution is all the data is accessible and in plain text readable markdown which also makes it easy to strap other things onto, search through with whatever tools you want and easily run a backup process on (especially since everything is neatly contained within a folder).

Don’t make the mistake most people of thinking dokuwiki is only useful as a traditional wiki, it is such a simple and general tool that its power extends far past that.

  • There is no way this person will be apprehended alive, they could walk up to a police station naked with their hands up get on their knees and beg for their life, every single police officer they could possibly encounter will universally pull out their handgun and immediately murder them in broad daylight and they will be cheered on by Good Morning America when they do for keeping everyone safe.

If you think the police will do otherwise you misunderstand the essential function of police, especially in the US, which is to protect capital and the owners of capital and sustain inequality through violence.

  • Exactly, what makes an act evil or not is a really complicated question unless the action in question is mass murder. In that case, there isn’t a debate, it is evil, there is no slippery slope. The CEO undeniably caused the deaths of countless people and maimed and permanently hurt many more. At least the person who killed the CEO actually carried out the act of taking someone’s life themselves and bore witness themselves to the horror of taking a human’s life. The healthcare CEO on the other hand was the most cowardly kind of murderer, someone who has killed far too many to name but simultaneously would be utterly shattered by exposure to actually witnessing first hand even a tiny fraction of all of the people they murdered suffering and dying right in front of them.

It is the ultimate form of violence to kill without a desire to know, to understand, to emphasize or even to remember because it zeroes in and underlines what makes violence horrific, the erasure of beautiful things that had a history, a past and a future… and that is all healthcare CEOs really do at this point, kill without a desire to know.

  • I’m sorry I am not trying to dispute the spirit of your respose but I have to disagree, freight trains are thousands of feet long and haul unbelievably large quantities of material, the idea that it is inefficient to have a human (really a pair of humans) oversee and be responsible for a machine that large is laughable honestly.

…so is the idea that there is a genuine shortage of people willing to work as conductors, it is a convenient lie companies tell to rationalize why nobody wants to work for them because they pay shit and respect their employees so little that they won’t even give them unpaid time for necessary doctors appointments (see recent action of US train workers).

This point is even more true for passenger trains.

It is a massive responsibility we can afford to pay two humans to do it, a certain micro amount of inefficiency is ok.

People, especially young people are having sex less across the board because everyday life has become a crushing grind, not because of videogames and staying inside. People do choose to do those things instead of socializing… because they are burnt out from trying to meet rent, getting treated like shit at work and sitting in hours of traffic everyday.

Young people are still just as horny, they are just also very tired and sad.

  • In the US and other post industrialized nations where land is more valuable for other uses than agriculture, sure.

However the deforestation in the amazon probably eats most of that up.

Cutting trees down for wood isn’t the worst of it though, the first half of the 21st century will be categorized by climate change scientists as the period where earth’s boreal forests burned away.

The amount of boreal foresl acreage burned in the last two decades is staggering and is accelerating to put it mildly.

  • Even if Mozilla/Firefox was at some point a healthy organization, the shear incredible disparity of power between Google and Mozilla/Firefox means that the probability that Mozilla/Firefox would remain a healthy, functional organization approaches zero over a long enough period of time.

This is a problem that needs legislative action to destroy Google’s incredible power and pseudo-monopoly control of search.

I am not saying Mozilla/Firefox isn’t toxic, but there a million ways that Mozilla/Firefox could end up a toxic entity and billions of dollars that are directly interested in that being the case so shrugs.

…but yeah I agree with you, Mozilla/Firefox definitely didnt turn into a shithole overnight, but until recently criticizing them has been very difficuly to do in a lot of circles.
