  • I really can’t stand how the modern writers have made Section 31 an official arm of Starfleet. The entire point of the original idea was that it was a parasitic conspiracy hiding within the ranks, but not actually part of the ranks.

They had the unconditional support of a Starfleet Admiral for the operation to discredit that Romulan politician and get their mole into power, though. And they have moles in foreign governments, indicating they have official backing and resources at some level. If they didn’t, they wouldn’t have moles; they’d have corpses who believed they were operatives. It’s hard to believe they’re not “officially unofficial”, given the things they’ve managed to pull off.

I do think that bringing it out into the open with a whole show absolutely kills the effectiveness of Section 31 as a story device though. I feel the same way about the latest season of Stranger Things, giving a face and voice to The Mindflayer. It’s like everyone’s forgetting the power of real mystery.

  • I know you’re looking for more immediate and stable income, but: Are you able to make anything? If you want to try your hand at a business, I’d be glad to help you with the tech stack side of things pro bono. I can get you set up with domain, email, website, and a marketing suite at least; I’ve also started four companies of my own so I can help you with the paperwork and structure stuff for that if you wanted.

I do this sort of thing entirely via email and video call for SMEs at my day job. It wouldn’t be steady at first and you might have to stop when you find a job… But in the meantime, while you’re looking, it’s work you can make for yourself. And who knows? Maybe it would become enough to sustain you on its own.

Just spitballing, anyway. Offer’s there 😊 Good luck!

  • When you tear down next, look for missing board components or any that lean at an angle they’re not supposed to. Canned air has been known to shear poorly-attached caps or whathaveyou clean off the board. Or maybe one of the wires in the 12v cable is broken and it’s delivering power just to most pins… The paperclip test just tells you if the PSU is dead dead, are you able to test with a multimeter instead?

Buzzing while the power supply is off makes me wonder if there’s literal bugs in it, if it’s buzzing while it’s unplugged. I suppose the buzzing could also be remaining power discharging, if it happens just after it’s been unplugged.

  • Not too far, or its possible right now depending on jow you want to define “animated”. I feel like there uses to be really low-budget cartoons on air which were really just still frames with some shake added, couple soumd effects, and voice acting. A lot like SolidJJ on YouTube now. Those wouldn’t even be too hard to do, if the AI were just one tool in the set - could probably crank out a few a week, anyway.

If you’re looking for twenty minutes of animation that doesn’t shift around like a fever dream while you’re watching it, maybe six to eighteen months. I do think human voice actors would be required, but you could do the music with Suno.

  • Splitting out storage and computer is definitely good first step to increase optimization and increase failure resiliency.

Exactly why I’ve been considering doing it this way for my new setup! I had to leave my last one on the other side of the planet and have felt positively cramped with just a couple TB worth of internal drives, can’t wait to properly spread out again.

  • Zen is a fork of Firefox, supports Firefox extensions, and retains the built-in access to the Mozilla extension/theme stores from vanilla Firefox. If you go to install an addon, it even gives a popup to “Add to Firefox”.

It’s a good browser with only minor issues. I’m on Win10; automatic updates don’t always succeed, and it seems like it blocks some communication between the 1password desktop app and the browser extension because I have to sign into each separately. Otherwise, I prefer it to Firefox in pretty much every way.
